The President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana (ICAG), Augustine Addo, has charged professional accountants to act as gatekeepers against financial irregularities such as fraud and embezzlement.
He explained that there was no financial irregularity that would not go through the accountant, urging them to act as professional bottlenecks to prevent such actions from happening.
“There is no fraud or embezzlement that does not go through the accountant.
“The Human Resource, Procurement Manager will come to you but you are like the goalkeeper so if even the Chief Executive Officer has done something that is not right find a way of making sure it does enter the goal post.
“Once you wear the hat of accountant you have the moral duty to insulate yourself against all these manipulations and let them know that this is not the man you can approach with any corruption,” he said, when he swore in new executives at the Annual General Meeting of the Kascity District Society of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana (ICAG).
The Kascity District Society is made up of Chartered Accountants living in Kasoa and its immediate environs.
AGM
The AGM saw the Joshua Lomotey-led administration handing over the helm of affairs to the Sylvia Amoro-led administration.
Their tenure will last for two years after which they will be eligible for a second term.
The other executives are the Vice Chairman, Simon Yaw Adzinyo; General Secretary, Abdul Fatawu Zakaria and Vice Secretary, Erica Nana Yamoah.
The rest are Treasurer, Rashidatu Saafu; Organising Secretary, Abdul Rhaman Fandoh, and Welfare Officer, Peace Ivy Gamour.
The ICAG President called on the accountants to demonstrate professional competence.
Mr Addo added that the accountant of today was not only a financial manager but needed a diverse skill to work across different disciplines such as human capital, natural, social and relationship capital.
“Let’s be financial managers everybody would want to consult and seek advise from. We have the brains. Let us use it in everything we do,” he added.
Acceptance
In her acceptance remark, the new Chairperson of the professional association, Mrs Amoro, said her administration’s vision would be central to the pillars of engagement and empowerment.
She called on all members to actively participate in the endeavours of KASCITY, stressing the importance of fostering a sense of inclusivity and engagement.
The chairperson further urged members to empower one another through the sharing of knowledge, opportunities and support.
“Together, we must elevate KASCITY to higher levels of relevance and impact.
“We must embrace every member, ensuring that welfare, unity and respect remain at the heart of our society,” she said.
