Multiple reports confirm that Nigerian billionaire Folorunsho Alakija, founder and executive vice chairman of Famfa Oil, has reportedly lost her sight.
The 73-year-old businesswoman’s health complications are said to have begun after a near-air disaster, which caused a significant spike in her blood pressure, subsequently affecting her vision.
Alakija and her husband, Modupe Alakija—Chairman of Famfa Oil—were reportedly on the same flight when the incident occurred. Sources indicate that although she began experiencing eyesight issues shortly after the event, she chose to establish a church rather than pursue medical treatment.
The situation has reportedly worsened, resulting in her complete loss of vision.
In 2004, Alakija founded the Rose of Sharon Glorious Ministry International, initially a small fellowship hosted in her home.
On her 69th birthday, she was conferred the title of apostle. Her faith-based activities have since become a significant part of her life.
In 2020, Forbes estimated her net worth at $1 billion, making her one of only two African women among the continent’s wealthiest. She also ranked 87th on Forbes’ list of the world’s most powerful women in 2015.
The news has sparked widespread reactions, with many expressing concern over her health and speculating on the implications for her business empire and philanthropic activities.
