Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, lawyer to former National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP) Chief Executive Officer Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, has criticised the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) over its handling of his client’s interrogation following his arrest in connection with alleged bribery in the government-sponsored abroad scholarship scheme.

Nkansah was picked up by the BNI after comments he made during a radio discussion about alleged irregularities in the award of scholarships for studies abroad.

Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey on Thursday, February 12, Awuah described the process as lacking transparency.

“The BNI charged him, took him to his house for a search, and subsequently drove out with him without informing the lawyers who were present,” he said.

He added, “You must have seen news that I didn’t know where my client was. He had been taken to an unknown location. That was true because the BNI had failed to disclose to me where they were taking him as his lawyer.”

Awuah also questioned the connection between the home search and the allegations against his client.

“I mean, the search of his home… totally, totally unrelated. It was curious,” he said, suggesting the actions were meant to demonstrate authority rather than serve investigative purposes.
