Among those on board were mourners who had attended a funeral for victims of the recent Asukawkaw fuel tanker explosion. Tragically, three of the deceased hailed from Krachi East Municipality and were returning home when the boat capsized.

Local officials say the vessel was dangerously overloaded, carrying not just passengers but also two motorbikes and bags of cassava dough—far exceeding its safe capacity. Strong winds are also being cited as a contributing factor.

The chaos that followed was met with swift action from nearby residents, who responded to distress calls and helped rescue four survivors. The remaining passengers were not as fortunate.

The incident has been reported to the Kpandai District Police Command, which is now investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. As the community mourns yet another loss, questions are being raised about safety protocols and enforcement on Ghana’s inland waterways.
