A woman identified as Esther Umoh has shared a harrowing experience involving a Bolt driver who allegedly threatened her with a cutlass after she refused to pay an additional fuel charge.
Esther recounted that she had booked a ride using the Bolt app, but upon the driver’s arrival, he demanded extra money for fuel and pickup. When she declined and cancelled the ride, the situation quickly escalated.
The driver reportedly retrieved a cutlass from the trunk of his car. Shocked and frightened, Esther questioned the driver about the weapon, to which he responded that it was for self-defence.
Fearing for her safety, Esther immediately contacted a friend in the police. Upon seeing her make the call, the driver fled the scene.
The incident has triggered widespread concern online, with users questioning the safety measures in place for passengers using ride-hailing services.
Online reactions have been mixed, with some users speculating that the driver’s behaviour suggested ulterior motives. Others expressed relief that Esther was unharmed and praised her quick thinking in calling for help.
The incident adds to growing conversations about passenger safety in the ride-hailing industry, with calls for companies like Bolt to implement stricter driver screening and response protocols to protect users from similar threats in the future.
