A recent survey from the Ghana Statistical Service has highlighted persistent bribery in key public institutions across the country, sparking concern over governance and accountability.

At the top of the list is the Motor Traffic and Transport Division (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, with more than 51% of respondents reporting personal experiences with bribery. The general duties wing of the police comes in second, with 37.4% of participants citing misconduct.

Other government offices frequently implicated include:

  • Passport Office – 29.9%
  • Traffic Management Authority (City Guard) – 28.9%
  • Ghana Ports & Harbours Authority – 28%
  • Births & Deaths Registry – 23.8%
  • Forestry Commission – 23.7%
  • Food & Drugs Authority – 22.2%
  • Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority – 20.2%
  • Police Criminal Investigations Department – 19.9%

The findings indicate that bribery is particularly entrenched in law enforcement and regulatory bodies, making it a recurring issue for ordinary Ghanaians seeking public services.

Officials are calling for stricter anti-corruption policies, more transparency, and enhanced citizen awareness to mitigate bribery. Experts warn that if these challenges are not addressed, public trust in government institutions will continue to erode.

The survey serves as a wake-up call that while Ghana has made progress in governance reforms, certain sectors remain highly susceptible to corrupt practices, affecting both citizens and the integrity of the state.
