The Canoe and Fishing Gear Owners Association of Ghana (CaFGOAG) has commended the government for the recent reduction in the price of premix fuel, describing the move as timely relief for canoe owners and artisanal fishers across the country.

Nana Kweigyah, the National President of CaFGOAG, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the Association had observed a steady decline in premix fuel prices over the past year, noting that the price dropped from GH¢25.20 per gallon in February 2025 to GH¢23.67 by December 2025, with a further significant reduction to GH¢19.80 per gallon.

He said the reduction would help lower the cost of fishing expeditions and support livelihoods in both coastal and inland fishing communities, where premix fuel remained a critical input for artisanal fishing activities.

However, the Association expressed concern over reports of non-adherence to the approved price at some landing beaches and called on all Landing Beach Committees (LBCs) to strictly comply with the reduced price as directed by the National Premix Fuel Secretariat.

He said any attempt to sell premix fuel above the official price undermined the government’s policy and amounted to exploitation of fishers, particularly where such actions were not agreed upon by canoe owners who purchased the fuel.

The Association also urged canoe owners to insist on buying premix fuel at the approved price and to promptly report any breaches by the LBCs to CaFGOAG or the National Premix Fuel Secretariat for appropriate action.

While commending the government for both the price reduction and improved supply of premix fuel, CaFGOAG called for increased and consistent distribution to all landing beaches, stressing that adequate supply was necessary to prevent artificial shortages, hoarding and price manipulation.

He further commended the National Premix Fuel Secretariat for its ongoing Landing Beach Committee Accountability to the community engagements, describing the initiative as an important feedback platform that would help safeguard the Community Development Fund.

CaFGOAG reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability and collaboration with the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, the National Premix Fuel Secretariat and other stakeholders to ensure fair access to premix fuel and the sustainable development of the artisanal fisheries sector.
