Afrobeats sensation Camidoh has shared a surprising insight into the early stages of his music journey—revealing that his career didn’t start with smooth vocals and hit melodies, but with hard-hitting rap bars.
In a recent interview on Hitz FM, the “Sugarcane” hitmaker opened up about how he initially pursued rap, only to realize that the genre was taking a toll on him. According to Camidoh, keeping up with the ever-evolving nature of rap music became too demanding—especially without the backing of a record label to help lighten the load.
He explained that the constant need to read, research, and sharpen his lyrics to meet rising standards made rap increasingly unsustainable. The competitive environment, he said, demanded a level of intensity and lyrical innovation that was difficult to maintain on his own.
For Camidoh, the turning point came when he recognized that singing gave him the creative freedom he craved. Unlike rap, where he felt pressured to constantly outdo himself lyrically, singing allowed him to express his artistry in a more natural and less strenuous way.
He emphasized that while rap requires continuous reinvention and heavy investment in wordplay and delivery, singing simply flowed better for him—and that’s when he decided to shift focus and build the brand we know today.
The transition has clearly paid off, as Camidoh has grown into one of Ghana’s leading voices in Afrobeats, winning hearts with his soothing vocals and heartfelt lyrics.
