During an interview on Opemsuo Radio monitored by News and Vibes, she reflected on her diagnosis, the medical procedures she underwent, and her advocacy for early detection and treatment.
Her decision to undergo a full mastectomy was driven by a strong family history of cancer.
Several close relatives, including her mother, grandmother, and multiple aunts, had lost their lives to breast cancer, while others had been diagnosed with stomach and bowel cancer.
Recognizing the pattern within her family, she prioritized her health and took immediate action upon receiving her diagnosis.
Although her cancer was detected at an early stage, when a less aggressive treatment could have been an option, she made the choice to remove both breasts entirely.
Rather than opting for lump removal, she decided on a double mastectomy to eliminate any chance of the disease spreading.
Her mother’s experience played a significant role in her decision. Diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 37, her mother initially agreed to have one breast removed but declined further surgery.
The cancer eventually spread, leading to her passing. Determined not to take the same risk, Benson embraced the full procedure without hesitation.
After undergoing the mastectomy, she chose reconstructive surgery, where her own body tissue was used to create the appearance of breasts. However, she declined nipple reconstruction, avoiding additional surgeries that she felt were unnecessary.
Since overcoming this personal challenge, she has become an advocate for breast cancer awareness. She consistently encourages women to perform regular self-examinations and seek medical attention for early detection.
Beyond spreading awareness, she has also been involved in fundraising initiatives to support women who cannot afford treatment.
Her advocacy aligns with the global recognition of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a period dedicated to educating people about the disease, promoting early screenings, and providing support to those affected.
Breast cancer results from the uncontrolled growth of abnormal breast cells, which can form tumors and spread to other parts of the body if left untreated.
While the majority of cases occur in women, the World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that a small percentage of men—approximately 0.5-1%—are also diagnosed with the disease.
