Candidate Loses Job Offer for Calling Recruiter on Sunday

Published:

A hiring manager has come under fire after admitting that he withdrew a job offer from a candidate simply because she called him on a Sunday to ask follow-up questions about the interview. His decision, shared on social media, has sparked widespread backlash, with many accusing him of being unprofessional and unfairly penalising the applicant.

The recruiter, known online as @femigibbs, revealed on X (formerly Twitter) that he had initially intended to offer the woman a position after interviewing her the previous day. However, he changed his mind after she contacted him on Sunday while he was attending church. According to him, the call was disruptive and indicated a lack of professionalism on her part.

He argued that interviewees are given an opportunity to ask questions during the interview, and failing to do so at the right time showed poor preparation. In his view, following up in such a manner demonstrated that the candidate was not a good fit for the role.

His comments quickly gained traction, with many social media users condemning his reasoning. Critics pointed out that rejecting someone over a minor issue like a follow-up call reflected a toxic hiring culture. Some argued that open communication should be encouraged rather than penalised, while others suggested that the matter could have been addressed during the onboarding process instead of outright revoking the offer.
