The cedi appreciated by nearly 40% against the US dollar in 2025
The Ghana cedi was Africa’s best-performing currency in 2025. This is according to data from Bloomberg.
According to a chart released by the platform, the cedi appreciated by nearly 40% against the US dollar over the year.
This impressive gain secured the cedi the top spot on the continent.
The Congolese franc and the Zambian kwacha followed in second and third place, respectively, rounding out a year of positive momentum for several African currencies.
The South African rand also posted a solid performance.
This notable appreciation marks a significant turnaround for the cedi, which faced severe pressures in recent years.
2026 will be a good year for Ghanaians – Dr Theo Acheampong
The recovery has been attributed to a combination of strategic policy interventions, including domestic gold-buying programs to bolster reserves, fiscal adjustments tied to an International Monetary Fund (IMF) program, and relative stabilization in global markets.
However, Ethiopia’s birr recorded the most significant depreciation against the dollar in 2025.
Sharing the news on his social media handle, financial analyst and technical advisor at the Ministry of Finance, Dr Theo Acheampong wrote, “Most African currencies performed well against the dollar in 2025, but the CEDI was the star performer at almost 40% y/y appreciation, followed by the Congolese franc, Zambian Kwacha and SA Rand in that order,” he posted.
The analyst had earlier commended the government for its efforts to improve the cedi’s performance and predicted that 2026 would “be a good year” for Ghanaians.
