The Ghanaian film and theatre industry has been struck by a tragic loss following the passing of celebrated veteran actor Mawuli Semevo.
The renowned actor reportedly died at the age of 63 on Thursday, 20 February 2025, at Ridge Hospital, where he was receiving treatment after sustaining severe burns in a fire accident at his home.
Reports indicate that the devastating incident occurred approximately a week prior to his death.
The news was first disclosed by Judith Addison of Beyond Burns International, a non-profit organisation dedicated to supporting burn survivors.
In a video shared on their social media platforms on 8 February 2025, Addison confirmed that Semevo had been critically injured in the fire, which left him with burns covering 44% of his body, respiratory injuries, and severe breathing difficulties. The fire also caused the complete loss of his hair, underscoring the gravity of the incident.
According to Addison, Semevo was asleep when the blaze broke out, leaving him unable to escape before sustaining life-threatening injuries. Medical personnel worked tirelessly to stabilise his condition at Ridge Hospital, but despite their best efforts, the actor sadly passed away due to complications from his injuries.
The extent of the damage from the fire and its cause remain unclear. However, the incident drew significant concern from his colleagues in the entertainment industry.
Fellow actors Ken Fiati and Edinam Atasti expressed deep worry over Semevo’s critical state before his passing, highlighting the void his death would create in Ghanaian performing arts.
