Ghana’s history is woven with the contributions of remarkable individuals who bridge the worlds of tradition, academia, and public service. Among these towering figures stands Dr. Jones Ofori-Atta—a distinguished economist, a revered academic, a dedicated politician, and a patriarch whose legacy continues to resonate profoundly in the nation’s economic and political landscape.

Born on December 7, 1937, into the influential Ofori-Atta family of Akyem Abuakwa, Dr. Ofori-Atta’s life was framed by a unique duality: a deep respect for traditional authority and a forward-looking commitment to modern statecraft. This blend of heritage and vision would become the hallmark of his multi-faceted career.

His intellectual journey began at the prestigious Achimota School, continued at the University of Ghana, and reached its apex with a doctorate in economics from the University of Ottawa. This formidable academic foundation propelled him into a respected scholarly career, where he served as Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, shaping the minds of future generations.

But for Dr. Ofori-Atta, theory was meant to inform practice. His foray into public service was both impactful and varied. He served the people of Begoro as their Member of Parliament and brought his economic expertise to the national stage as Deputy Minister of Finance and Economic Planning during Ghana’s Second Republic. Later, in the Third Republic, he returned as the finance spokesperson, consistently advocating for sound economic policy. His leadership extended to critical national institutions, most notably as Chairman of the Volta River Authority, where he guided a cornerstone of the nation’s development.
