Former Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) and the National Commission for Civic Education, (NCCE) Charlotte Kesson-Smith Osei, has reflected on the challenges and achievements of the Constitution Review Committee (CRC).

In a post shared on her X page on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, she described the journey as demanding but rewarding, shedding light on the obstacles the committee faced.

“We didn’t always agree. We had vigorous debates. We challenged each other but we were united by something larger: a commitment to Ghana’s future.

“That diversity of thought, experience, and expertise made our work infinitely better. And the patriotic hearts? That’s what kept us going through the difficult moments,” she wrote.

The CRC officially presented its final report to President John Dramani Mahama on Monday, December 23, 2025.

CRC proposes removal of mandatory retirement age of 60 from Constitution

The committee, chaired by Professor H Kwasi Prempeh, Executive Director of the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), was mandated to review the 1992 Constitution and propose reforms to strengthen Ghana’s democratic governance framework.

Other members of the committee include Justice Sophia Adinyira, a retired Supreme Court Justice; Professor Kwame Karikari; former Electoral Commission Chairperson Charlotte Osei; Dr Godwin Djokoto; Ibrahim Tanko Amidu; Dr Esi Ansah; and Dr Rainer Akumperigeya.

Among its key recommendations, the committee proposed that the legislature be separated from the executive.

It also emphasised that the constitution does not provide for a third term for the President and suggested extending the presidential term from four to five years.
