The Savannah Region has become the heartbeat of Ghana’s culinary ambition as Chef Sabiatu Mahazu attempts to set a new Guinness World Record for the longest cooking marathon by an individual. Her cook-a-thon, which began on Saturday, September 5, at the Jakpa Palace forecourt in Damongo, is scheduled to run until Friday, September 12 — a staggering 150 hours of nonstop cooking.

The current record stands at 140 hours and 11 minutes, set by Liberian-Australian chef Evette Quoibia in 2024. Chef Sabiatu’s goal is to not only surpass that benchmark but to bring the title home to Ghana, becoming the first Ghanaian chef to hold the record.

The atmosphere in Damongo is electric. Supporters have gathered in waves, turning the palace grounds into a festival of food, music, and cultural pride. In one spirited moment, Chef Sabiatu was seen singing along with a musician, using a ketchup bottle as a makeshift microphone — a snapshot of her energy and resilience despite the physical toll of the challenge.

Her attempt carries added weight, following previous unsuccessful bids by Ghanaian chefs Failatu Abdul-Razak, Abena Kwartemaa, and Ebenezer Smith. For many, Sabiatu’s effort represents a chance at redemption and a celebration of Gonja culinary heritage.

As the hours tick by, the nation watches with anticipation. If successful, Chef Sabiatu will not only make history but also inspire a new wave of culinary excellence rooted in tradition, endurance, and national pride.
