The chief of Aburi, Nana Okyere-Kwame, has shed light on a long-standing tradition that has puzzled many in the town.
According to him, kenkey sellers in Aburi refrain from selling on Thursdays due to a taboo established by their forefathers.
In an interview with Adom News, Nana Okyere-Kwame revealed that the gods who visit the town on Thursdays dislike the scent of maize, a key ingredient in kenkey. To avoid the wrath of the gods, the sale of kenkey was banned on Thursdays.
“The sale of kenkey on Thursdays is forbidden in Aburi,” the chief clarified.
“This taboo was established by our ancestors because the gods who visit our town on Thursdays are displeased by the scent of maize. To avoid their wrath, our forefathers decreed that kenkey sales be halted on Thursdays, a tradition we continue to respect.”
The chief’s explanation has clarified the mystery surrounding the Thursday kenkey sales ban in Aburi, highlighting the importance of respecting tradition and cultural heritage in the town.
