Chief Justice outlines 2026 plans for judiciary

The Judiciary is set to roll out a number of measures aimed at decongesting courts and improving access to justice, Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie has announced.

The update followed a visit by the Chief Justice to the Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, and was shared on her official X page on Saturday, January 17, 2026.

According to the post, the Chief Justice outlined plans to reduce court congestion through initiatives including morning and afternoon court sessions, the expansion of Alternative Dispute Resolution services, and the establishment of specialised courts, such as Galamsey courts dedicated to prosecuting illegal mining cases.

“The Chief Justice shared plans to decongest the courts through measures such as morning and afternoon court sessions, expanding Alternative Dispute Resolution services, and specialised courts, including Galamsey courts, dedicated to prosecuting illegal mining cases,” the post stated.

“He also announced ongoing revisions to the Rules of Court, expected to come into force by March, as well as proposals to decentralise the Ghana Law School entrance examination by accrediting selected law faculties to administer the standardised exam nationwide,” it added.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang reiterated her support for the Judiciary’s efforts to modernise the legal system and reduce case backlog.

“I expressed my appreciation for the visit and the comprehensive update and reaffirmed my support for the Judiciary’s efforts to improve efficiency and access to justice, particularly the initiatives aimed at decongesting the courts,” she added.
