The Chinese Language Day has been commemorated by the Confucius Institute at the University of Cape Coast (CIUCC) in the Central Region.

The 17th International Chinese Language Day event was held at the Perfect Peace Preparatory School in Ataabadze, on the theme: “Chinese: Sparking colourful dreams.”

It formed part of a collaboration between Hunan City University in China and the University of Cape Coast.

The event, which was aimed at enhancing language learning and fostering global cultural exchange, featured activities such as the display of vibrant colours, music and cultural performances. In attendance were Chinese language learners, educators, development partners, and representatives of Chinese companies operating in the country and other teaching centres.

Significance

The Ghana Director of CIUCC, Prof. Amo Ofori, said language education was a critical pathway to global engagement and innovation, adding that the Chinese language continued to open doors to knowledge, culture and international collaboration.

“Language does not merely help us communicate; it shapes our imagination, expands our horizons, and gives colour to our aspirations.

“For our students, learning Chinese is not simply an academic pursuit, but a journey into new ways of thinking, new opportunities, and new dreams,” he said.

Prof. Ofori said the institute was actively working towards the development of a comprehensive national Chinese language curriculum to strengthen structured learning across schools in the country.

He said the curriculum, which was currently at the draft stage, would align with international standards.

Global opportunities

The Deputy Registrar of the university, who is also the Registrar at the College of Humanities and Legal Studies, Ebenezer Aggrey, said the event was an important platform for the promotion of multilingualism, cultural understanding and international cooperation in an increasingly interconnected world.

“Language must be understood as the first step to understanding, and understanding is the foundation of peace and cooperation.

“Those who take interest in learning Mandarin are positioning themselves for global opportunities in education, trade, diplomacy and innovation,” he added.

Impact

The China Director of the Confucius Institute at UCC, Professor Zang Yonghong, also highlighted the growing impact of Chinese language education on students’ academic and professional development, adding that the programme had created pathways for international recognition and career advancement.

“Chinese language is not only a tool for communication; it is a gateway to opportunities, a bridge between cultures and a catalyst that transforms lives.

“Our students have demonstrated remarkable talent and dedication, winning national competitions and representing Ghana on the global stage.

“Many of our graduates secure employment even before completing their studies, while others continue their education in China through scholarships and exchange programmes.

These achievements clearly show that learning Chinese is not just about language, but about building careers, expanding networks, and transforming futures,” she said.
