CID intensifies manhunt for gang leader over stolen AK-47 service rifles

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service says it has intensified efforts to arrest a suspected gang leader known as Hoyefi, believed to be in possession of two stolen AK-47 service rifles and other firearms used in a violent robbery at Nkasem in the Ahafo Region.

According to the Director-General of the CID, COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, Hoyefi is currently on the run alongside two other suspects identified as Dauda and Muhammad Ali, following a coordinated robbery attack on December 2, 2025.

“Efforts have been intensified to arrest suspect Hoyefi, who has been identified as the gang leader and is believed to be in possession of the stolen weapons, together with other firearms used during the robbery,” she said.

The CID also confirmed the arrest of five suspects in connection with the robbery, which targeted multiple locations at Nkasem on the same day.

The suspects, Mutawu Kofi, Mahama Dusagio, also known as Salifu; Shaibu Issa Jalo, alias Jibo; Abdul Suleman, and Bukari Sule, also known as Taylor, were arrested on separate days following sustained intelligence-led operations.

The CID explained that the suspects, together with other accomplices armed with weapons, blocked the Goaso–Tepa Road before launching simultaneous attacks on the Nkasem Police Station, Adwumapa Cocoa Buying Company, Kobe Gold Buying Company, and the Asutifi Rural Bank area.

“The assailants blocked the Goaso–Tepa Road and simultaneously attacked multiple locations at Nkasem,” the CID stated.

During the attack, the armed robbers made away with two AK-47 service rifles, cash from the rural bank, GH¢14,000 from the Adwumapa Cocoa Buying Company, and GH¢12,000 from the Kobe Gold Buying Company.

The CID further disclosed that an employee of the Adwumapa Cocoa Buying Company was shot and injured during the robbery.

Following sustained intelligence gathering and forensic investigations, the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit arrested Mutawu Kofi, aged 35, a commercial tricycle rider, on January 16, 2026, at a location known as Ata ne Ata near Nkasem.

“He admitted his involvement in the robbery during interrogation,” DCOP Donkor revealed.

Further investigations led to the arrest of Mahama Dusagio, aged 45, an illegal miner and resident of Nkasem, as well as Shaibu Issa Jalo, alias Jibo, aged 28, a trader at Chereponi.

The CID also arrested Abdul Suleman, aged 40, a herdsman at Tanga near Karaga in the Northern Region, as part of the expanding investigation.

On January 25, 2026, another suspect, Bukari Sule, alias Taylor, aged 25, a trader at Alaba in Kumasi, was arrested in connection with the robbery.

The CID said investigations remain ongoing, with a strong focus on retrieving the stolen firearms and arresting all remaining suspects.
