Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has stated firmly that Members of Parliament must face the law when necessary, explaining that their roles and privileges do not grant immunity from accountability.

His comments follow a police invitation to the Asutifi North legislator, Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, who is being investigated over an incident involving the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS). The confrontation reportedly took place at Hwidiem on November 1, 2025.

The MP is accused of mobilizing residents to obstruct a NAIMOS operational team during their work. Security officers stationed with the task force were said to have come under attack.

While the MP has denied the allegations — claiming he only stepped in to calm tensions — the case has now escalated. Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has ordered the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters to officially take control of the probe.

Bagbin emphasized that the ongoing investigation should clear any perception that parliamentarians are sheltered from legal procedures, noting that parliamentary standing does not override national law.

As the inquiry continues, the Asutifi North MP remains under scrutiny while police gather evidence to determine whether criminal charges will follow.
