Journalist Erastus Asare Donkor has characterised the cleaning of polluted water bodies by the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) as a waste of resources.
He likened the ongoing exercise to cleaning a pig in a muddy pool.
According to him, the illegal mining activities must be halted first before any cleaning takes place.
“Spending any money on cleaning rivers at this time is like cleaning a pig in a muddy pool. Waste of resources!! Stop the pollution first!” he wrote on Facebook.
Exercise
On February 24, 2026, the EPA launched a Pilot Water Cleaning Exercise with Ionic Nano Copper on the Birim River at Adukrom in the Asiakwa Area.
The event, which brought together key stakeholders, partner institutions, community representatives, and members of the media, forms part of ongoing national efforts to restore and protect Ghana’s water bodies from pollution and degradation.
In her address, the Ag. Chief Executive Officer of the EPA, Prof. Nana Ama Browne Klutse, highlighted the growing concerns over water pollution, particularly the impact of illegal mining and other anthropogenic activities on the Birim River.
She underscored the importance of science-driven, innovative, and collaborative approaches to water restoration.
According to her, the pilot intervention represents a practical step towards reclaiming polluted water bodies and strengthening environmental governance.
A major highlight of the event was the pilot water cleaning demonstration by the technical team. This showcased the operational process and effectiveness of the cleaning technology (Ionic Nano Copper) being deployed to improve water quality.
