The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has underscored the role of the Ghana Climate Atlas in advancing gender equity, particularly for women in rural agriculture and the informal sector.

Speaking at the launch of the Atlas in Accra, the Minister noted that climate change continues to disproportionately impact women, who form a significant part of Ghana’s agricultural workforce and informal economy.

He explained that erratic rainfall, prolonged droughts, and flooding often affect women more severely, as many depend on small-scale farming and climate-sensitive livelihoods for survival. According to him, the introduction of the Climate Atlas will help address these inequalities by providing localized, high-resolution climate data to guide targeted interventions.

The Atlas, developed by the Ghana Meteorological Agency in collaboration with the Danish Meteorological Institute, offers detailed projections on rainfall patterns, drought risks, and temperature changes across communities.

Mr. Nartey George stated that this data will enable government agencies and development partners to design programs that directly support women-led green businesses and climate-smart agricultural practices. He added that with better access to climate information, women farmers can make informed decisions on planting seasons, crop selection, and resource management, improving productivity and resilience.

The Minister emphasized that integrating gender considerations into climate planning is critical to ensuring inclusive development, noting that empowering women with the right tools and data will strengthen household incomes and national food security.

He further indicated that the Atlas aligns with Ghana’s broader commitments under the Paris Agreement, reinforcing efforts to build a climate-resilient and inclusive economy.
