The Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) on Wednesday, 11 March, reportedly failed to attend a scheduled meeting with the National Labour Commission (NLC) over its ongoing strike action. The apparent refusal by CLOGSAG to attend the meeting is being viewed in some quarters as a snub.

The commission has served as a mediator between the government and CLOGSAG over the years. It had instructed the association to cancel the strike action and meet with the commission to find solutions to their concerns.

The Executive Secretary of the NLC, Bernice Welbeck, speaking on Ghana Tonight on TV3, explained that the meeting between the NLC and CLOGSAG has been rescheduled. She added that the new date comes with instructions from the commission for CLOGSAG to suspend the strike action.

“Because they didn’t appear and they are still on strike. You know, when a party is on strike, or has instituted an industrial action, the substantive matter cannot be heard. So they’ve been asked to call the strike action off immediately and appear next week, Wednesday, 18 March 2026,” she said.

She also indicated that the initial strike action had been declared illegal.

“Now, the declaration has been made, which is a kind of ruling, that the action they have taken is illegal. And so we are moving step by step,” she added.

The Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment, Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, recently appealed to CLOGSAG to halt the strike, saying the action “took the government by surprise”. He acknowledged that the matter had been discussed with the finance minister and urged members of the association to “believe the promise”.

However, CLOGSAG remains unmoved, citing a lack of a concrete roadmap for resolving the dispute.
