Renowned Chef Ebenezer Smith has been exposed for presenting a fake Guinness World Records (GWR) certificate during a press conference at the Labadi Beach Hotel on July 2, 2024.
The certificate was purportedly issued in recognition of his achievement in breaking the record for the longest cooking marathon.
However, an official from GWR has confirmed that the certificate presented by Chef Smith is a fabrication and not authentic.
“We did not issue any certificate to Chef Smith,” said the GWR official.
“Our records show that Alan Fisher still holds the record for the longest cooking marathon, with a time of 119 hours and 57 minutes.”
The fake certificate scandal has sparked outrage in the culinary community, with many calling for Chef Smith to apologize and retract his claims. The incident has also raised questions about the credibility of Chef Smith’s cook-a-thon achievement and his intentions.
On February 1, 2024, Chef Smith embarked on a culinary challenge at the Amadia Shopping Centre in Spintex, Accra, cooking non-stop for 35 days until March 6, 2024. Although he initially aimed for a 360-hour cooking marathon, he surpassed his goal by over 400 hours, equivalent to 21 days. He ended on March 6.
Following Chef Failatu Abdul Razak’s unsuccessful attempt to break Alan Fisher’s record of 119 hours and 57 minutes set in November 2023, expectations were high for Chef Smith’s attempt.
In the world of culinary records, Nigerian chef Hilda Baci had recently extended the record to 93 hours and 11 minutes in June, surpassing India’s Lata Tondon’s record of 87 hours and 45 minutes. However, Chef Fisher raised the bar even higher with his record-breaking 119 hours and 57 minutes in November.
