Renowned Ghanaian Chef, Ebenezer Smith, has confessed to faking a Guinness World Record certificate, citing desperation to make a living as his motivation.
In an interview on GHOne monitored by News & Vibes, a remorseful Smith revealed that his desire for fame and financial stability led him to present a counterfeit certificate claiming a record for the longest individual cooking marathon. However, Guinness World Records verified that the certificate was bogus.
With tears in his eyes, Smith expressed regret for his actions, saying, “But in my quest to earn a living, it has landed me this way I am sorry, and I beg the entire nation.”
Smith’s apology has sparked a mix of reactions, with some calling for forgiveness and others demanding consequences for his deception.
On July 2, 2024, Chef Smith convened a press conference to announce his purported achievement of breaking the world record for the longest cooking marathon. He presented a certificate claiming to be from Guinness World Records as proof of his feat. However, his triumph was short-lived.
Guinness World Records Limited’s PR Manager, Madalyn Bielfeld, swiftly debunked Chef Smith’s claim, revealing that the organization had not received any application from him.
She confirmed that the actual record holder remains Alan Fisher of Ireland, who achieved the feat in Matsue, Shimane, Japan, from September 28 to October 3, 2023, cooking for an impressive 119 hours, 57 minutes, and 16 seconds.
Chef Smith’s supposed record was exposed as a sham, leaving his reputation in tatters.
