Couple Details Harrowing Encounter with Nigeria Police
A Nigerian couple has recounted a harrowing experience with police officers in Owerri, alleging they were assaulted, detained, and extorted while taking their baby to school.
According to the wife, whose video detailing the ordeal has gained traction on TikTok, the incident began when their child’s school bus broke down. The couple decided to drive the child to school, but during the trip, the wife felt hungry, prompting them to stop so she could buy food.
While parked, a vehicle pulled up beside them. Several men, who identified themselves as police officers, approached and began attacking the husband without explanation, ordering him into their vehicle. Despite the wife’s protests, the officers offered no reason for the arrest and soon returned to detain her as well.
During the drive to an undisclosed location, both husband and wife were reportedly assaulted repeatedly, suffering more than 20 slaps alongside verbal abuse. The officers allegedly demanded ₦500,000 for their release. When the husband explained he could not afford the amount, he was subjected to more physical abuse. Eventually, he agreed to pay ₦150,000, after which they were freed—but the officers kept their car key.
Refusing to let the matter rest, the couple pursued the officers on a motorcycle. As the officers realised they were being followed, one of them attempted to recapture the wife. She managed to escape, seeking safety at a nearby car wash while her husband gathered bystanders for help.
The wife, visibly distressed in the video, condemned the officers’ behaviour, calling them “thieves” and describing the incident as deeply traumatising. Her video has since prompted a wave of reactions online, with some commenters questioning the husband’s compliance during the arrest, while others expressed outrage at the police’s alleged conduct.
As conversations around police brutality and extortion in Nigeria continue, many have urged the couple to formally report the case and seek justice.
