A couple has been sentenced to a total of 44 years in prison for their role in the death of their three-year-old son, who died from a respiratory illness due to severe malnutrition.
Tai and Naiyahmi Yasharahyalah, both in their 40s, were found guilty of neglecting their son, Abiyah Yasharahyalah, who was restricted to an extreme vegan diet and suffered from a range of health problems, including rickets, anaemia, and stunted growth.
The court heard that the couple had shunned mainstream society and lived “off-grid,” creating their own bespoke belief system that drew on elements of New Age mysticism and West African religion.
Prosecutors described the case as one of “breathtaking” neglect, with the couple’s actions leading to the tragic death of their young son.
