The recent clash between youth and security personnel at Jacobu points to a deep need for holistic civic and moral education, not just formal schooling, leading member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Kwame Nkrumah Botsio, has said.
In a social media post, Botsio described the incident in the Amansie Central District as “unfortunate” and argued that the youth must be equipped with “ethical, moral, legal, and environmental education.”
This, he believes, is crucial for them to understand the dangers of illegal mining (galamsey) and the repercussions of obstructing state security.
His comments follow reports of a confrontation in the Ashanti Region mining community, where a joint police and military anti-galamsey task force allegedly met resistance from local youth, leading to the death of one and injury of another.
He specifically highlighted the constitutional duty of civic institutions and political parties to lead this educational drive.
“All sectors of society must join the bandwagon, including the NCCE Gh and the political parties, who have a mandate under Article 55(3) of the 1992 Constitution,” he stated.
Article 55(3) mandates political parties to, among other things, educate the public on civic responsibilities and the principles of the Constitution. Botsio’s statement is a direct call to action for these bodies to engage more actively in communities to foster understanding and prevent conflict.
The Jacobu incident is the latest in a series of flashpoints in Ghana’s protracted fight against galamsey, which continues to cause severe environmental degradation despite numerous state interventions.
Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, says a full-scale investigation has commenced into an alleged scuffle between some suspected illegal miners and police personnel at Jacobu in the Amansie Central District of the Ashanti Region, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to others, as seen in a viral video circulating on social media.
He assured the public that the matter would be pursued to its logical conclusion.
He further assured that any persons found to have acted unlawfully will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
