The Ministry of the Interior has announced its decision to lift the curfew imposed on Nalerigu Township and its surrounding communities in the North East Region with immediate effect, citing improved peace and security in the area.

In a statement shared on Facebook on Monday, February 16, 2026, the ministry announced that the decisions made by the Minister of the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Mubarak, acting on the advice of the North East Regional Security Council and by Executive Instrument.

Nalerigu, the capital of the North East Region, had been under curfew as part of measures aimed at maintaining law and order amid security concerns.

The restriction formed part of broader efforts by authorities to prevent further escalation of tensions and to safeguard lives and property.

According to the ministry, the lifting of the curfew follows an assessment by the Regional Security Council, which determined that calm has been restored and that the security situation has sufficiently stabilised to warrant the withdrawal of the restriction.

While announcing the lifting of the curfew, the government cautioned chiefs, opinion leaders, youth groups and residents of the area to exercise restraint in the face of ongoing challenges.

The statement emphasised the importance of dialogue and non-violent approaches in resolving disputes and sustaining peace.

The statement further encouraged residents to channel their energies into constructive efforts that would consolidate the gains made in restoring order.

“Government continues to urge Chiefs, Opinion Leaders, Youth, and People of the area to exercise restraint in the face of the challenges confronting them and to use non-violent means to channel their energies into ensuring peace in the area,” the statement stated.
