The tensions surrounding the burial of highlife icon Daddy Lumba took a dramatic turn at the Kumasi High Court when his sister, Akosua Brempomaa, resorted to one of the most powerful traditional appeals within Asanteman.
Her confrontation with the family head, Abusuapanin Victor Kofi Owusu, escalated until she invoked the revered Otumfuo Ntamkese — a sacred oath that demands the highest level of attention from traditional authorities. This powerful act immediately placed the matter under the scrutiny of the Sumankwaahene, who has now summoned Brempomaa to respond to the invocation.
Footage from the court premises shows Brempomaa emotionally confronting the Abusuapanin after proceedings, insisting on clarity regarding the true circumstances of the celebrated musician’s death. Her actions drew the attention of observers and intensified the already heated dispute over when and how the burial should take place.
The Otumfuo’s Great Oath is regarded as a last resort in serious conflicts, often compelling a thorough investigation into the grievances raised. Failure to honour the oath is considered a grave challenge to the authority of the Asantehene and the traditions of the kingdom.
Brempomaa’s decision to take such a step signals how determined she is to prevent the burial from going ahead until the family receives satisfactory explanations about the loss of the music legend.
