The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Dr. Patrice Motsepe has defended the governing body’s decision to strip Senegal of the AFCON title, insisting it reflects the independence of its institutions.

Motsepe made the comments in response to stakehodler backlash, following its decision to strip Senegal off the title.

“The Independence is reflected by the decisions that were taken by the two bodies.”

“The CAF Disciplinary Board took one decision. The CAF Appeals Board took a totally different decision.”

On Tuesday, March 17, 2026, CAF announced it had upheld Morocco’s appeal to strip Senegal of the title they won January, in an unprecedented ruling.

According to the board, the 17-minute walk-off by Senegal during the final, after Morocco were awarded a stoppage-time penalty, breached tournament rules.

As a result, Morocco were declared winners with a 3-0 scoreline over Senegal, for their first title in 50 years.

Senegal have indicated their willingness to appeal the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
