A 36-year-old electrician, Zigah Kofitse, has been sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment with hard labour by the Denu Circuit Court after being found guilty of defiling his 15-year-old daughter, which resulted in her pregnancy.
The incident was brought to light when the Assemblywoman for the Avoeme West Electoral Area noticed physical changes in the teenager and engaged her in conversation. The girl disclosed that her father was responsible for her pregnancy.
The Assemblywoman accompanied the victim to the Aflao Police Station to file a complaint. A medical examination conducted at the Ketu South Municipal Hospital, including an ultrasound scan, confirmed that the girl was 15 weeks and four days pregnant.
According to the facts presented in court by Prosecuting Officer Inspector Albert Kombor, the victim is the biological daughter of the accused. The court also heard that Zigah had previously been married to the victim’s aunt, with whom he had two children—the victim and her younger brother. After the dissolution of the marriage in 2021, the children continued living with him.
The prosecution outlined two specific incidents in February and April 2025 during which the defilement occurred. On both occasions, the accused allegedly gave soft drinks to the children. The girl reportedly became drowsy after drinking hers and was later assaulted.
In April 2025, the victim began to experience signs of pregnancy and informed her father. He reportedly offered to arrange an abortion. On May 1, 2025, after returning from an errand, she encountered a relative and disclosed the situation, which led to police involvement.
During the investigation, Kofitse admitted to the offence in his cautioned statement. He pleaded guilty on his first appearance in court on May 7, 2025. The court then handed down a 10-year custodial sentence with hard labour.
