Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem is urging religious leaders in Ghana to become active supporters of the national tax campaign. He believes churches and other faith centres have the influence needed to boost tax compliance across the country.

His remarks came during the launch of the Sustained National Tax Education Programme and the Modified Taxation Scheme held in Accra on November 5, 2025. He suggested that the same commitment used to encourage tithing could be directed towards educating congregations about their civic duty to pay taxes.

According to the deputy minister, tax awareness must extend into everyday environments such as churches, mosques, markets, schools, and office spaces to build a more responsible society.

He referenced ongoing efforts by the Ghana Revenue Authority to make tax procedures more efficient through digital systems. Platforms like ICUMS, e-VAT invoicing, Ghana.gov, and online filing tools have been introduced to reduce stress, enhance transparency, and encourage participation in the tax system.

Nyarko Ampem added that expanding the national tax net remains a major priority. Over the next three years, the GRA hopes to enrol more than eight million informal sector workers under the country’s tax structure.

The Modified Taxation Scheme plays a key role in this objective, as it offers simplified registration and payment processes for small-scale traders, artisans, and others who usually operate outside formal systems. By reducing bottlenecks and encouraging voluntary compliance, the government expects these reforms to create a more inclusive tax culture.

He noted that religious institutions hold substantial influence and can therefore contribute meaningfully to transforming attitudes toward taxation and national development.
