A massive fire has razed the Zabzugu Market in the Northern Region, leaving traders in shock after large quantities of yams and other products were destroyed.
The blaze broke out in the early hours of Monday, February 23, and quickly engulfed the market, devastating wares before firefighters could respond.
Residents rushed to help contain the fire, but efforts were hampered by the absence of a fire station in the Zabzugu District.
Without immediate support from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), community members relied on buckets and other improvised means to try to control the flames, while some traders attempted to salvage their goods.
Eyewitnesses reported that the fire was driven by a strong windstorm that swept through the town, spreading flames rapidly across the market.
The destruction has left many traders counting losses and calling for urgent measures to improve fire prevention and emergency response in the district.
