Veteran Kumawood director Jackson K. Bentum has come out strongly against TV presenter and actor Big Akwes following his public criticism of casting choices for the upcoming movie, Ibrahim Traoré: The Last African Hero.
The controversy began when Big Akwes questioned the decision to cast Kwadwo Nkansah, popularly known as Lilwin, in the lead role. He argued that more fitting actors were available and claimed the casting was merely a result of Lilwin producing the film himself. He also accused Lilwin of constantly placing himself in lead roles in his own projects, calling the trend monotonous.
In response, Jackson K. Bentum, who directed the film, did not hold back. During an interview with Papa Jay of Poleeno Multimedia, he harshly dismissed Big Akwes’s comments and insisted that the casting was based purely on merit, not personal bias or influence.
Bentum, a seasoned figure in Ghana’s film industry, pointed to his track record of discovering stars like Emelia Brobbey, Vivian Jill, and Kyeiwaa as evidence of his casting integrity. He maintained that Lilwin was chosen because he was the best person for the role, not because he funded the production.
He also made it clear that if he had seen Big Akwes as a good fit for the lead, he would have cast him without hesitation.
The exchange has stirred discussion in Kumawood circles, highlighting ongoing tensions around self-casting, favoritism, and leadership within Ghana’s movie industry.
