Ghanaian DJ Sammy Opens Up on Breaking into the Global Music Scene
In an exclusive chat with GhFrimpzy, London-based DJ and music executive DJ Sammy shared her thoughts on what it takes for Ghanaian artists to make it big globally. According to her, it’s all about creating music that transcends borders.
“I’d love to see more Ghanaian artists pushing boundaries like Moliy did with her hit single ‘Shake It To The Max’,” she said. “The song has a Caribbean vibe that resonated with a global audience.”
While she emphasizes the importance of global appeal, DJ Sammy stresses that authenticity is key. Artists should stay true to themselves and their unique sound rather than trying to fit into trends.
“Ghanaian music is all about vibes,” she explained. “The best African tracks that went global did so because of the energy and feeling in the music. It’s not just about the lyrics or language.”
She pointed to examples like South Africa’s Amapiano movement and Nigeria’s Asake, who’ve made waves globally with their distinct sound and infectious rhythms.
However, DJ Sammy notes that Ghanaian music is underrepresented in the UK scene, particularly in London. “You hardly hear any Ghanaian music here,” she revealed. “It’s mostly the same names like Shatta Wale, King Promise, and Gyakie.”
On a more exciting note, DJ Sammy announced her upcoming mixtape, which will showcase her global sound and commitment to pushing African music beyond borders. The project will be available on her YouTube channel, Sammy Sets, and other major music platforms.
