A man’s deception was exposed in dramatic fashion at Ikeja Market after he was caught pretending to have a disability in order to beg for money.
A viral video, shared on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), captured the moment when the man’s fraudulent act was uncovered.
According to reports, he had been keeping one of his hands bent to create the illusion of a physical disability. However, while accepting money from a kind passerby, he unintentionally stretched out the same hand, revealing that it was perfectly functional.
The discovery sparked outrage among onlookers, who began shouting at the man for his deceitful actions.
The video was captioned, “He was given money and had to normalize his hand… Poverty can make someone do the undo.” The individual who posted the video further claimed that the man had been scamming people daily, collecting money under false pretenses.
As the footage spread online, it ignited a wave of reactions from social media users, with some condemning the act while others expressed sympathy. Many shared their own experiences of encountering similar fraudulent beggars in different parts of the city.
One user, @ogochukwu, claimed to know the man personally, stating, “I know this guy, we attended the same church at Iju, St Kizito.” Another user, @BiggieBTC, humorously remarked, “This country will make you discover a hidden talent.” Others debated whether the man should be punished or simply left alone, with some arguing that desperation and economic hardship push people to such extremes.
The incident has fueled discussions about the growing prevalence of deceptive begging tactics in urban areas, highlighting the need for increased awareness and vigilance among the public.
