Driver arrested with 713 suspected narcotic slabs

The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has arrested a driver for unlawfully possessing 713 slabs of dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs at Asanso.

The suspect, identified as Atampugri Akanyani, was arrested on January 26, 2026, when a Police team on snap check duty intercepted a Mercedes‑Benz Sprinter bus, registration number AC 718‑25, at the Asanso checkpoint in the Ashanti Region.

A Police brief said a search conducted on the vehicle, driven by Akanyani, revealed nine nylon sacks concealed in the bus containing dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs.

The sacks were opened, and a total of 713 compressed slabs of dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs were found.

The brief said during the arrest, the suspect allegedly attempted to bribe the officers with GH¢150,000, which was declined.

Akanyani is currently in Police custody assisting investigations, while efforts are underway to trace the source of the suspected narcotic drugs and identify other persons connected to the case.
