The Office of the Special Prosecutor has begun investigating allegations surrounding a supposed GH¢4 million bribe linked to the ongoing transformation of Ghana’s number plate system. The Chief Executive of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority, Julius Neequaye Kotey, has been invited by the anti-corruption agency to clarify claims he recently made in the media.

Kotey revealed that unknown influential figures allegedly attempted to persuade him to abandon the new Digitalised Vehicle Registration Plate project by offering a major financial reward. The initiative, which introduces digital plates to improve national road safety and clamp down on vehicle-related crime, has been described as a major reform within the transport sector.

Following his public disclosure, the OSP moved swiftly to summon him for questioning to confirm the authenticity of his claims and to identify those behind the alleged bribery scheme. Investigators are now gathering and assessing information to determine whether criminal actions were attempted in a bid to obstruct government policy.

The Special Prosecutor is expected to make further inquiries into the matter as the probe progresses.
