The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has clarified the charges associated with the ongoing onboarding exercise to verify and migrate all manually registered vehicles onto a digital platform.

The DVLA has responded to reports of a discrepancy between their announced charge of Ghc25 and the actual on-ground charge of ₵288.55. According to the Authority, the total cost of onboarding is indeed ₵288.55, which covers the issuance of a Certificate of Title and a Vehicle Registration Card (VRC).

However, it stated that the charge had been reviewed at GHc 25 as it prepares to roll out a new licence plate system, which would result in changing all existing vehicle numbers.

It noted that the GHc 25 is the cost for biodata verification, which enables the successful migration onto the digital vehicle registration platform.

“The fee of GHc25 will NOT be accompanied by the issuance of a Certificate of Title and a Vehicle Registration Card. These documents can be obtained later during the acquisition of the new licence plate when it is rolled out.”

According to the DVLA, a Certificate of Title and Vehicle Registration Card establishes ownership status and transfer records; safeguards against fraud, theft and unlawful transfer of title; and provides ease in insurance acquisition, among others.

“Inasmuch as these services are available for clients who may need them due to their circumstances, the application for these services would also be available at all DVLA offices during the issuance of the new number plates,” it emphasised.

It therefore condemned the over-charging.

“The Authority wishes to reiterate that, at no point during the current onboarding process should a client be required to pay more than the stated GH¢ 25.”

It encouraged the general public to deal directly with DVLA officers at its various stations and to take official receipt and report any staff of the Authority who may make financial demands beyond the approved fees.
