The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has unveiled plans to implement a cashless payment system for spot fines, a move aimed at promoting greater transparency and strengthening accountability in its enforcement operations.
The decision comes months after the Authority suspended the issuance of spot fines by its compliance team in October 2025.
The suspension followed widespread concerns over limited public education on the exercise and complaints from motorists regarding the handling of cash payments.
According to the DVLA, the new arrangement will introduce an online platform that enables drivers to settle fines electronically, ensuring that all payments are made directly to the Authority without physical cash exchanges.
Under the proposed system, motorists who are cited for traffic offences will be required to make payments digitally at the point of enforcement, removing any ambiguity about where the funds are directed and recorded.
Speaking on Channel One TV on Friday, February 13, the Director of Corporate Affairs at the DVLA, Stephen Attuh, stated: “So we’re putting in place a platform that allows for payment online so that if you are caught on the road having committed an infraction, if they charge you, you pay, and you see that you are paying directly to DVLA. And we are sure that that will leave us with some level of transparency.”
