The Eastern Nzema Traditional Council (ENTC) has performed customary rites to part company with Adamus Resources Limited, a gold prospecting company in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region.

The chiefs and queenmothers poured libation and slaughtered a sheep to invoke the gods in their resolve to distance themselves from the company.

This followed a news conference at Atuabo in the Ellembelle District to support President John Dramani Mahama and the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, over the revocation of the mining lease of Adamus Resources Limited.

Revocation of mining lease

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources recently revoked the mining leases of Adamus Resources Limited at Akango, Salman and Nkroful, citing multiple breaches of the Minerals and Mining laws by the company.

The chiefs were clad in black with red arm bands to mourn the state of suffering endured under the company over the years.

Devastation

Addressing the conference, the Paramount Chief of the Eastern Nzema Traditional Area, Awulae Blay IX, said, “The issue of illegal mining, irresponsible and environmentally damaging activities on Adamus concessions has been a thorn in the flesh of our communities for far too long”.

The President of the Eastern Nzema Traditional Council said Adamus Resources Limited could not boast of any tangible project in the Ellembelle District, as well as the awarding of scholarship packages to the indigenes to further their education.

Awulae Blay IX added that most of the indigenes in the catchment area were not employed by the company.

“For many years, the Eastern Nzema Traditional Area (Ellembelle Maanle) has played host to large-scale mining operations.

We are not opposed to mining.

We are not opposed to development.

We are opposed to the destruction of our lands,” he said.

“The administration of President Mahama has always stood for the rule of law.

We have witnessed a systematic erosion of environmental regulations over a long period of time, and we had less power to fight this mining company on our own,” he emphasised.

Awulae Blay IX seized the opportunity to commend President Mahama for thinking about the good people of Ghana, especially the people of the Ellembelle District.

Fulfilled promises

“To His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, you promised to reset Ghana. You promised to protect our water bodies.

You promised that the era of “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil” regarding galamsey was over. You have kept your word.

“For this, the people of Eastern Nzema (Ellembelle Maanle) say Ayekoo.

You are a true son of the land who values the toil of the farmer and the fisherman more than the gold of the foreign exploiter,” he said.
