The Eastern Regional Chapter of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has strongly condemned the brutal assault on a teacher, Michael Quayson, at the Kade Senior High Technical School (SHTS).

The association has, therefore, called on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to immediately arrest and prosecute all students and non-students identified in the viral video, stressing that justice must be swift to restore confidence among teachers nationwide.Addressing a press conference at its Regional Secretariat in Koforidua on November 10, the Eastern Regional Chairman of NAGRAT, Godwin Awoonor-Yevu, said the growing wave of assaults on teachers in Ghana was becoming rampant.

Sit-down strike

Mr Awoonor-Yevu, consequently, warned that NAGRAT might embark on a nationwide sit-down strike if swift action was not taken against the perpetrators by the law enforcement agencies.

The victim, Michael Quayson, the regional chairman stated was on the evening of October 5, ambushed and violently attacked by eight other individuals, made up of current and former students of the school, while returning home.

The assault, Mr Awoonor-Yevu indicated, was a result of the teacher’s strict supervision during the recent West African Senior Certificate Examination (WASSCE), which provoked the students.

Incident reported

The incident, the Regional Chairman of NAGRAT further stated, was reported to the Kade Police, leading to the arrest of one student after a video capturing the assault went viral on social media.

The suspect has since been granted bail while investigations continue.

He described the attack on the teacher as “unprovoked, barbaric and unacceptable”, insisting that the safety of teachers was non-negotiable.

“The safety and dignity of teachers are non-negotiable. It is both a moral and legal obligation of the state, the GES and the Ministry of Education to guarantee the protection of every teacher.

“No teacher should face physical harm, verbal abuse, or psychological trauma for performing his or her duties,” he said.

Other cases

He cited several similar cases that happened in 2025, where a student of Takoradi Technical Institute stabbed a teacher, who was preventing him from using an unauthorised entry route.

Also, a student of the Christian Methodist SHS, Walter Yesutor Adanunyo, stabbed a teacher who prevented him from cheating during the WASSCE examination.

Mr Awoonor-Yevu further stressed that in 2024, Ishmael Famous, a teacher at Asuoso SHS, was stabbed in the eye by a student for instructing students to return to class.

Again in 2021, a final-year student of Three Town SHS also stabbed a teacher who intervened to stop him from assaulting a junior student.

According to Mr Awoonor-Yevu in 2021, students at the Nungua Cluster of Schools in Accra attacked a teacher, Moses Onyameasem, in another widely condemned incident.

He said such cases had demonstrated an alarming pattern of violence that threatened the safety of teachers nationwide.
