The Electoral Commission of Ghana has assured voters in Ayawaso East Constituency that all arrangements are in place for Tuesday’s by-election, promising a free, fair and transparent poll.
Director of Research at the EC, Fred Tetteh, gave the assurance in an interview with JoyNews on Monday, March 2, ahead of the parliamentary contest.
“Let me assure the voting public in Ayawaso East that in terms of logistics and materials such as the registers, the BVDs, verification machines and ballot boxes, everything that goes with the election process is ready,” he said.
He added that personnel are also in place to manage the election, with about 455 officers and 130 temporary staff ready to be deployed.
“Personnel are ready as well… we are ready to deliver free, fair and transparent elections tomorrow,” Mr Tetteh stated.
Mr Tetteh explained that both sensitive and non-sensitive materials have been distributed to polling stations across the constituency, while presiding officers and support staff have undergone training on election procedures.
The EC official said the Commission has put measures in place to ensure the timely opening of polling stations and efficient voter verification, noting that preparations have been smooth.
The by-election was triggered by the death of the sitting MP, Naser Toure Mahama, who passed away on January 4, 2026, after a brief illness. Mr Toure represented the seat on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress and had been re-elected in the 2024 general elections.
In accordance with the Constitution, the EC set March 3, 2026, as the date for the by-election, bringing renewed focus to one of Accra’s key constituencies.
Multiple candidates filed nominations to contest the seat, including the NDC’s Baba Jamal, the Baba Ali Yousif of the New Patriotic Party, an independent contender, and others.
Mr Tetteh urged voters and political parties to cooperate with election officials and conduct themselves peacefully on election day.
He stressed that the Commission remains committed to safeguarding the integrity of the vote and ensuring that the will of the people is reflected in the final results.
Polling is expected to begin at 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday, with results to be declared after counting and collation.
