Kwame Baffoe Abronye, the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has made startling claims regarding the disappearance of over 1,300 containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
According to him, these containers, which contained essential cables and other electrical equipment, have allegedly been smuggled to Burkina Faso under dubious circumstances.
Speaking in a recent interview on Net2 TV, Abronye expressed deep concern over the situation, stressing that the loss of these materials severely hampers the government’s ongoing efforts to improve electricity supply across the country.
He argued that the missing equipment plays a crucial role in projects initiated by President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, following recommendations from the European Union to enhance Ghana’s power infrastructure.
Abronye further alleged that a similar situation occurred during the previous NPP administration when smart meters and cables were transferred to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.
However, he claimed that these assets went missing at the Tema Port soon after the NDC assumed power.
According to him, these missing materials were smuggled into Burkina Faso under suspicious circumstances.
He stated that former Energy Minister John Jinapor had inspected these containers before the handover and had confirmed that they were intact.
However, following the 2020 general elections, Abronye alleged that NDC supporters stormed the Tema Port and took control of these valuable assets, which later vanished.
The NPP chairman is now calling for a thorough investigation into the missing ECG containers, emphasizing that such incidents undermine national development and hinder the government’s ability to provide stable and affordable electricity to Ghanaians.
His allegations have sparked discussions about transparency, accountability, and the security of state assets.
As of now, ECG and relevant government authorities are yet to respond to the allegations. However, Abronye’s claims have intensified political debate over asset mismanagement and corruption within Ghana’s energy sector.
