Girls’ education is very important for a nation’s growth. When girls are given the chance to learn and succeed, the benefits go beyond the classroom. Educated girls grow into confident women who make good decisions, support their families, and contribute to their communities. In this way, educating girls helps build stronger families, communities, and nations.
Ghana has made good progress in expanding access to education through policies such as the Free Senior High School. However, giving students access to school is only the first step. For girls, especially, the environment where they learn also matters. They need safe and supportive places where they can study, rest, and grow. Without this, the full benefits of education cannot be achieved.
This idea reflects the values of Achimota School. One of the school’s most respected leaders, James Emman Kwegyir Aggrey, once said, “If you educate a man, you educate an individual; but if you educate a woman, you educate a nation.” His words remind us that educating girls has a powerful impact on society.
Today, many bright girls who gain admission to Achimota cannot fully enjoy boarding life because there is not enough dormitory space for female students. Some girls have to travel long distances to school every day, which can affect their safety, health, and studies. Others miss the guidance, discipline, and sense of community that boarding school life provides.
To help solve this problem, the Achimota School 2002 Year Group has started a 25th Anniversary Legacy Project to build a new Girls’ House. The building will provide a safe and comfortable place for about 250 girls each year. It will give them a supportive home where they can focus on their studies, grow in confidence, and prepare to become future leaders who will help develop Ghana.
However, a project of this scale cannot succeed without collective commitment. This is a call for all hands on deck. Alumni, corporate partners, philanthropists, parents, and friends of Achimota are invited to contribute toward this shared legacy. Every contribution, whether large or small, moves us closer to a future where no girl’s education is compromised by circumstance.
