The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has inaugurated the Governing Board of the Ghana Scholarships Authority.
The inauguration was carried out in line with Act 1149, which was approved by President John Dramani Mahama.
At the ceremony, the Minister stressed that scholarship awards must no longer be influenced by individual discretion, nepotism or partisan interests.
He explained that the authority to award scholarships now rests firmly with the Ghana Scholarships Authority to ensure fairness, equity, and the protection of the national interest.
Mr Iddrisu outlined the key criteria for awarding scholarships as merit, genuine financial need, defined beneficiary categories and national development priorities.
He also urged the Board to operate with the highest standards of accountability and transparency to restore public confidence in the system.
Responding on behalf of the Board, the Chairperson expressed appreciation to President Mahama and the Education Minister for the opportunity to serve.
The Chairperson assured that the Authority has entered a new phase focused on ethical leadership, competence, and strategic investment in Ghana’s youth.
The Governing Board comprises representatives from key sector ministries, the Attorney-General’s Department, the Association of Ghana Industries, the Students Loan Trust Fund, civil society organisations in education, the Authority’s Secretariat and Presidential nominees.
