The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that his ministry has secured clearance from the Ministry of Finance to recruit approximately 9,600 personnel into the country’s education sector.
He explained that out of the total figure, about 7,000 positions will be allocated to diploma and degree-holding teachers to strengthen basic and secondary education.
Additionally, 1,500 recruits will be deployed to higher education institutions to bolster academic capacity, including between 40 and 50 lecturers expected to support teaching and research at the university level.
“We have had approval from the ministry of finance to recruit about 9,600 carders in the teacher profession. 7,000 will be teachers, degree and diploma teachers, some 1,200 to 1,500 will be for institutions of higher learning to beef up the faculties of the universities”
“A certain number will be spread across all the universities to recruit at least some 40 to 50 lecturers depending upon the need of the university and our capacity as a government in terms of managing the compensations budget of the country, remember that we are still under IMF,” he said on JoyFm’s Super Morning Show on Thursday, April 2.
The Minister further disclosed that the recruitment exercise will also cover non-teaching staff, including security personnel, to improve administrative and operational efficiency across schools.
“We will also allow for the recruitment of what we call non-teaching staff, drivers, matrons, accountants, and then security.”
He has also announced that candidates of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will now select their preferred senior high schools only after their results are released.
