Executive Director of the Alliance for Christian Advocacy Africa (ACAA), Rev. Opuni, has said that Ghana’s education system is suffering from what he described as a moral deficit.
His comments come in the wake of recent hooliganism in inter-school sports festivals.
“Government is investing so much in the education sector, but the attitudes of some students are very worrying and need to be addressed seriously,” he said.
The former General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) noted that the increasing rate at which students are attacking teachers and brutalizing one another calls for urgent measures to curb the menace.
He emphasized that tackling this issue requires collaborative efforts from parents, teachers, government, and all relevant stakeholders.
Speaking on The Big Agenda on Adom TV, Rev. Opuni proposed a national dialogue to end hooliganism in schools.
“President John Dramani Mahama, during his first tenure, organized an Economic Forum at Senchi to discuss strategies to revive Ghana’s economy. I was there. He did the same when he assumed office for his second term. We should adopt a similar approach to find solutions to hooliganism in schools,” Rev. Opuni said.
He added, “If you look at the investment the government is making in the education sector and the kind of bad behavior students are displaying, it is clear that the current system is suffering from a moral deficit. A deficit in the sense that the nation is running at a loss.”
The Central Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) confirmed the arrest of three suspects in connection with the violent disturbances that marred the District Schools Athletics Games in Agona Swedru on Thursday, February 19, 2026.
The incidents left several students hospitalized and sent shockwaves through the regional academic community.
Earlier this month, GES banned three schools in the Eastern Region from participating in inter-school competitions after students from the schools allegedly gang-raped a female student during an event.
Prior to these incidents, the Ashanti Region Inter-Schools (Interco) athletics competitions were marred by violent clashes between student groups at Baba Yara Stadium, resulting in severe vandalism.
It is against this backdrop that Rev. Opuni Frimpong said the current education system is suffering from a moral deficit.
