All power generation units are now back in service after engineers restored operations following a fire at the GRIDCo substation at Akosombo Dam last week, the Minister for Energy has announced.

“Mission accomplished. All generation units are now back in service,” the Minister said in a release issued today, referring to the recovery from the “major system disruption” caused by the substation fire.

Engineers, technicians, and emergency teams worked around the clock to restore power and stabilise the national grid after the incident, he stated.

“Through their tireless work, discipline, and commitment to country, power has been restored and system stability secured,” the statement added.

The Minister extended his “sincere appreciation” to the leadership and staff of the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo), Volta River Authority (VRA), Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), and all supporting agencies involved in the response.

“This moment shows that even under pressure, Ghana can rely on the strength and skill of its people,” he said.

The GRIDCo substation at the Akosombo Dam caught fire last week, triggering a major disruption to power generation and supply across parts of the country. The incident impacted output from the hydroelectric plant and destabilised sections of the grid.

With the substation now repaired, generation units at Akosombo and other plants have been brought back online, restoring system stability.

Meanwhile, a Committee has been constituted to investigate the cause of the fire.
